Are you looking for a way to earn money and have fun? Get some inspiration from Kasey, age 11. Learn how Kasey turned his hobby into a successful business, in his own words:
I have always loved antiques. I like them because they’re full of mystery.
When hunting for antiques, I look for things that have been forgotten or thrown away. You never know where they’ve come from, who owned them, or how their journey has brought them to you.
One day, I was watching television when I came across “Antiques Roadshow.”
The show caught my attention because people were walking in with old things like the stuff I had. Appraisers were telling these people their items were worth big bucks!
“Antiques Roadshow” made me realize that I could take the treasures I found from the past and sell them to help build my future. The only question was how to do it.
My mom and I came up with the idea of starting my own website. To advertise, I ask permission to leave my business cards in local stores. I also pass them out to everyone I know so they can tell people. I plan to talk about it on Facebook, too.
My first customer was looking for an old shaving mirror to put on her dresser. I finally found one at a thrift store. I bought it for $3, and sold it to her for $21! I framed that first dollar for good luck!
I’m building my future from the past by taking three steps:
- I search for old things that look interesting to me, or that people ask me to find.
- I look up the history of each item and determine its value.
- I sell it to customers to make a profit.
That’s how I’m building my future from the past.
